RPS Bristol secures backing for Tavistock expansion proposal

By David Callaghan, Planning

RPS has helped secure initial local authority approval for a major development in West Devon that includes a railway line.

RPS Bristol developed proposals for 750 properties in Tavistock and the reopening of a disused rail link to the town enabling passengers to travel to Plymouth.

The plans, which have been approved as the preferred option by West Devon Borough Council in its draft core strategy, are part of a vision for Tavistock including a redeveloped school, a community hospital and extra care housing.

The firms is acting for Kilbride Community Rail, which wants to build a station and lay track along a route from Tavistock to Bere Alston to link with the line into Plymouth. The line will provide an alternative way to travel into the city, easing pressure on the A386.

RPS Bristol technical director Ian Jewson told Planning: “It is a sustainable scheme that will change the whole pattern of travel from Tavistock. It will also help attract visitors to the town from Plymouth.”

The council plans to publish its core strategy covering the period up to 2026 next March.
